About Us

Bath Mencap Society is a local charity supporting people with learning disabilities and their families and carers in Bath and North East Somerset. We aim to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities through education, social connection and inclusive activities.

We believe that everyone with a learning disability should be able to access the same social and leisure opportunities as their peers, in a safe, relaxed and welcoming environment, and to live fulfilling lives where they are valued equally.

Bath Mencap provides a wide range of social activities for children, young people and adults. For adults, activities include ten-pin bowling, Sunday lunch cooking sessions and Uproar, a quarterly nightclub at Komedia – Bath’s first club night exclusively for adults with learning disabilities, their families, carers and friends.

The Senior Gateway Club, which has been running since the 1970s, offers a weekly social evening during term time for adults with learning disabilities. In December 2025, following the retirement of its Trustees, the Senior Gateway Club merged with Bath Mencap, securing the long-term future of the Club. Each week, between 15 and 30 people aged 21 to 70 attend, many of whom would otherwise have very limited social opportunities. Club nights are held at the Carswood Centre and include a tuck shop and a varied programme of activities such as quiz nights, pub nights, skittles and seasonal celebrations including Pancake Day, St Patrick’s Day, Christmas, Easter and Halloween parties.

For younger people, Junior Gateway Club runs an active programme of activities for under-16s, including sports, arts and crafts, bowling, cinema trips, quizzes, music and dance.

Bath Mencap’s goal is to continue supporting local people with learning disabilities to live more independent and connected lives – building friendships, gaining confidence, and taking part in exciting activities and new experiences.

Bath Mencap is affiliated with, but not funded by, National Mencap. As a registered charity established in 1964, we receive no statutory funding and rely entirely on grants, donations and fundraising to continue our work.
